By royal edict, the Cid is banished from Christian Spain
by King Alfonso VI of Castile. The royal edict allows him nine days in which to
leave the kingdom but forbids him from taking with him any of his wealth and
goods. Any man in the kingdom who offers aid to the Cid will forfeit his
estate. Nevertheless, the Cid enlists the aid of Martín Antolinez in swindling
two moneylenders, Raquel and Vidas, in exchange for two large sealed coffers,
supposedly loaded with the Cid’s riches but containing only sand. The Cid and a
small force of vassals then ride away and make a secret camp. On the morning of
the Cid’s actual departure from the country, with a fair-sized group of loyal
vassals, Mass is said for all at the abbey where Doña Ximena, the Cid’s wife,
and his two infant daughters, Doña Elvira and Doña Sol, have been ordered to
remain.
01r, 0001-0013
Cid was weeping but he thanked the God for not being
included in that fallen society in Burgos (exiled)
Thanks to you lord, father who

01r, 0014 – 0025
begins with GOOD NEWS (sarcastic) because Cid and his men
are banished form Burgos., Although people wants to help him, they were scared
of king Alfonso VI’s order.
0020
God, what a good vassal, if he had a good lord…..Christina value

01r, 0026 – 00037
people who help Cid will also receive punishment even death.
Cid asks to open the door, but no one does for the fear of King AlfonsoVI.
Christina people have great
sorrow (0029)
As hearing this, I felt like Cid (Campeador ,,, first
mentioned as campeador 0031) was just like Jesus Christ, abadonanded by everyone,
because fear of King Harrod.
01r, 0038 – 0049
Cid gave a kick but the door did not open. And the 9-year
old girl explained why people locked their door securely (for fear of King
Alfonso VI’s order), and she preyed for Cid , saying “May
God help you with all his holy powers. (0048)
Mas el criado uos uala con todad sus uertudes santas (mas el
Criador vos vala con todas uss vertudes santas). 0048
02r. 0050 – 0061
Cid now realizes King does not like him, and he moved away
from the door. Arrived at Santa Maria (PLACE???) and prayed ----Probably he prayed to Santa Maria in his heart?
He camped on the river bank in the wilderness in Arlanzón.
02r. 0062-0073
no one sells Cid food,
(because they are forbidden) , but Martín Antolínez helped Cid and his
men with food for free and all other supplies. Martin says to Cid, in a fortunate hour were you born,
le’ts rest and head out at dawn. Because Martin will be accued for helping him.

02r 0074-0086
Martin explains why he wants to leave Burgos with Cid, and
Cid replies, I have nothing to reward you (if I had, I would double your
salary). With no possession, Cid suggests to fill the chests with sand so that
they will be heavy.
0077
things I will leave behind in Burgos is not worth a “fig” to me , said Martin
02r 0087 – 0099
Cid continues to Martin to go visit Rachel and Vidas
quickly, because Cid will pawn his rest of heavy wealth. Only God will see this
act, and Martin went to Burgos and sought Rachel and Vidas.
0093-0094
Christians not see it, Creator see

03r. 0100 –0111
When Rachel and Vidas were counting their wealth, Martin
arrived and asked to talk in private. Martin asked for not to betray him to
Moors or Christians. Canpeador has lots of wealth0----continue

that he was accused of that are in TWO CHESTS. Keep these
chests without looking inside (because filled with sand in reality, not with
Gold) because Campeador was banished by King. Rachel and Vidas consulted together how to make a good
profit out of this.
GREED
03v. 0124-0135
Rachel and Vidas says they know Cid won riches from Moores,
but he receives the suspicion (Jealous). Rachel and Vidas asks Martin what is the motivation of Cid
to ask them keep the chests. But
Martin explained (lied) Cid never will inappropriate thing to you… all for your
advantage, if you lend Cid 600 marks.
Marcos… (0135) isn’t it the GERMAN CURRENCY?
03v. 0136 – 0147
Rachel and Vidas said they will give Cid 600 marks. But when
Martin asked to give him now, they said the deals are not made like that. First
bring chests, then, we will give you.
Martin asked them to come and see Cid so that his men can
help them carry the chests. Keep them in your safe without knowing to Moors or
Christians.
04r 0148 –0159
Martin had two girls on his horse, and they kissed Cid’s
hand. Cid smiled, and said now you both have my wealth because I am banished.
04r. 0160 –0171
Martin Antolínez finalized the deal. For keeping Cid’s two
chest without peeking for one year and lending him 600 marks, they can claim these wealth. If they
break it, Cid will not give them a penny. Martin said, Now I will go with you
both with two chests, so that you will have two chests in safe, and you give me
600 marks, so that Cid can leave here before the cock
crows (0169). Two girls were so happy when the chests were loaded up.
04r. 0172-0184
both girls were happy, and kissed Cid’s hand, saying “in a fortunate hour you girded sword” (0175 epiteto)
you will leave Castile , and you will win against Red Silk lined coat
Moorish. Cid, ordered them as they
pledged. Then 300 marcs in silver they paid.

Becoming a soldier of fortune, the knight leads his host
in conquest of one Moorish territory after another, each time generously
sharing the spoils and booty among his knights and vassals, even the lowliest.
Thus he builds up a larger and stronger force with every foray, and after each
victory Mass is said in thanksgiving. The Cid fights his way to the eastern
side of the peninsula, where he fights his most crucial battle and wins his
greatest victory when he takes as his prisoner Count Ramón of Barcelona. After
Count Ramón has been humbled and forced to give up all his property, he is

Although Minaya Alvar Fáñez returns to
King Alfonso with gifts and a glowing report of the Cid’s successes, the king
does not revoke his decree of banishment. Minaya’s estates are restored,
however, and he was granted freedom to come and go without fear of attack. The
Cid continues his campaigns against the Moorish territories in order to
increase his favor with King Alfonso. After he has conquered the provinces of
Valencia and Seville, however, his men grow tired of fighting, and many wish to
return to Castile. The Cid, although still generous and understanding, proves
himself master by threatening all deserters with death.
