El existencialismo
1 20th century European philosophical movement, best known through the works of the French atheist philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre who asserted that "existence precedes essence' and emphasized the role of individual responsibility and authenticity. For Sartre and other existentialists, the world of existence is on its own meaningless or absurd, and humans must create their own meaning by becoming actively involved in social and political causes. Literature should also have a social and political purpose (see arte compromedtido). Precursors fo existentialism were the Danish theologian Soren Kierkegaard and the German philosophers Martin Heidegger and Karl Jaspers. Other influential writer from the mid-20th century wer eAlbert Camus and Simone de Beauvoir.
